Baby White Rhino is being feed.

Four characteristics that White Rhinos have are:

  • Reproduces - a baby rhino is born live and it also drinks milk from his mother. A baby rhino is born with out a horn and any rough skin. Before the breeding season a male White Rhino marks his territory and the females that are in that territory have to mate with him.

  • Made of more than one cell- the horn is made of a material called keratin. Keratin is a material which your nails are made up of.

  • Grows and develops- a baby rhino is born without a horn and without any rough skin. When the baby rhino starts to develop its horn starts to grow and his skin starts to get rough and thick.

  • Responds- If you hit a rhino really hard with something you would probably lose your life because the rhino will kill you with its deadly horn. As well if you enter the Rhinos territory without any permission you ran into some huge troubles.

The features of my living thing that causes it to be classified in the way that it is, is because...

My animal has a lot of features that I can keep explaining about for a long period of time. One of the very interesting ones is that my animal is near threatened. This type of rhinoceroses are starting to leave our planet because of humans killing them just for their horn. On our planet, there are only 20,405 species of White Rhinos left. I can't believe that so many people just look at how this population is dying and don't bother to help them. There are a couple foundations in the world that accept donations to help save the White Rhinos. You probably know think that there is only a bad side to this situation, but there is a good side. The good side to this situation is that there are a lot of really kind people on our planet that are still fighting to save the population of White Rhinoceroses. Because of those foundations, every year, the population of White Rhinos increases. White rhinos are very interesting mammals because they have walked and grazed on our earth dated as long as 50 million years ago. I chose my animal because it has a very interesting body structure. For example, this animal has hoofs like some mammals do but it has two very sharp horns which almost no mammal has. White rhinos are very exciting mammals and I can't wait until scientists discover something new about White Rhinos!

Other Interesting facts about White Rhinos:

  • White rhinos can live up to 45 years old in the wild

  • Mother rhinos are very nurturing. The young stay with them until they are approximately 3 years old

  • Rhinos have lived on earth for 50 million years

  • The rhino's closest relatives are more likely to be tapirs, horses and zebras. One of the reasons why is because they are hoofed animals

  • Rhino horns can grow back if cut or broken off (only if the horn was broken or cut above the skin. If it is cut or broken with skin, the rhino will die because of infection if he doesn't get any medical help)

  • The word rhinoceros is a combination of two Greek words – rhino (nose) and ceros (horn)

  • Rhino horns are not made of bone, but of keratin, the same material found in your hair and fingernails

  • A group of rhinos is called a crash

  • Rhino pregnancies last 15 – 16 months

  • World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22
